• Global Monsoon Research Hub

IMPO provides consolidated support to global monsoon research coordination from weather to climate change time scales, under WMO's World Weather Research Programme (WWRP) and WMO co-sponsored World Climate Research Programme (WCRP).

The IMPO closely coordinates its work with the relevant governing structures, including WWRP SSC and WGTMR, and WCRP JSC and SSGs of CLIVAR, GEWEX and SPARC.

  • CLIVAR/GEWEX Monsoons Panel

The CLIVAR/GEWEX Monsoons Panel coordinates monsoons research between GEWEX and CLIVAR, including the role of convection and land surface in the monsoons, as well as ocean-atmosphere interactions.

IMPO provides the primary support to the Monsoons Panel, on behalf of both CLIVAR and GEWEX, and also promotes its collaboration with other monsoon-relevant activities of both WWRP and WCRP.

  • Monsoons Panel Working Groups

The Monsoons Panel has a structure of 3 regional working groups focusing on Asian-Australian Monsoons, African Monsoons and American Monsoons.

These working groups lead regionally focused monsoon research in each of the three areas of globe. The Panel fosters a global view of the monsoons, coordinating the regional working groups, and facilitate linkages among international research efforts.

  • Cross-Panel Coordination

IMPO proactively supports the cross-panel coordination on monsoon research, and helps linking the Monsoons Panel with the monsoon-related activities of different regional ocean panels of CLIVAR, land-atmosphere panels of GEWEX and the atmospheric composition activities of SPARC. IMPO also supports the WWRP WGTMR monsoon activities, International Workshop series on Monsoons, etc.

The International Monsoons Project Office (IMPO), hosted by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), an autonomous institute under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, is India's contribution to global monsoon research coordination. The IMPO functions as an International Project Office of the World Meteorological Organization's (WMO's) World Weather Research Programme (WWRP) and the WMO/IOC-UNESCO/ISC World Climate Research Programme (WCRP).

  • Monsoon Mission III to be launched soon: Secretary, MoES

India will soon launch the third phase of Monsoon Mission, said Dr M. Ravichandran, Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), speaking at the official launch of IMPO jointly established by IITM and WMO. India's support for IMPO has been included as an integral component of Monsoon Mission III. See a media report here.

  • Launching Event for IMPO

WMO, WCRP, WWRP, MoES and IITM have jointly organized an online event celebrating the launch of IMPO, to commemorate the launch and to highlight the consolidation of monsoon research under WCRP and WWRP with IITM's continuous support. The event featured remarks by WCRP and WWRP Chairs, Video Message from Hon'ble Minister of MoES, Secretary of MoES and Director of IITM. It also included a key scientific talk by international monsoons expert Prof Chih-Pei Chang, on the current highlights of global monsoons research. A video recording of the event is available at https://youtu.be/8nCGIbhRnb8.

  • Seventh WMO International Workshop on Monsoons (IWM-7)

IWM-7 is being organized at New Delhi, India, jointly by IMD, MoES and WWRP WGTMR, in cooperation with the CLIVAR/GEWEX Monsoons Panel of WCRP and IMPO hosted by IITM. The workshop is scheduled to be held during 23-26 March 2022. For more information and abstract submission, visit the workshop website here.
